Calcium: How to Take it for Best
Absorption
Be Aware Of The Difference
Calcium can be taken in one of several combinations.
For most benefit, you should read and follow the
directions on the bottle. (As you should for everything
you eat.)
Calcium should be taken with Vitamin D for maximum
absorption.
Be aware, too, that taking calcium with meals can
interfere with iron absorption. As it is fine to take it
outside of mealtime, this should be considered.
CALCIUM CARBONATE
If your supplement contains calcium carbonate, you
should take it with meals.
Calcium carbonate is also more likely to cause
constipation. Take multiple, small doses for maximum
effectiveness.
CALCIUM CITRATE
If it contains calcium citrate, it can be taken at any
time.
Suggested daily Calcium intake: (1500 mgs. of elemental
calcium)
Foods highest in calcium content are:
- milk, including buttermilk and
chocolate
- Calcium fortified drinks…soy, rice, Skim milk powder,
Yogurt
