Depression And St. John’s Wort
I want to step into a bit of a controversial area and
it's not usually where I tread confidently. I just
received this information about SJW from yet another
trustworthy clinical source. I want to quote Dr. Laz
Bannock directly and also include his contact
information. I personally have seen a tremendous amount
of depression in my nursing clinics and it has touched
my own family. It is disturbing to see the confusion
around SJW. My reason for sharing this information is
NOT to get you to buy it, but to realize how confusing
the information is, and how you have to educate your
self.
MILD TO MODERATE depression touches vast numbers of
people, and if you are someone suffering from this, you
wouldn't normally seek medical help. But you could
easily listen to or see the news or read the newspapers.
Dr. Bannock writes:
"Depression is a common mental disorder that may affect
as many as 121 million people worldwide.13 Symptoms can
include depressed mood, loss of interest, low
self-esteem, loss of sleep or appetite, low energy, and
poor concentration. When depression becomes severe, it
can lead to loss of ability to function and even
suicide. Given the weight of research supporting the use
of St. John’s Wort in mild-to-moderate depression, it is
a reasonable alternative to prescription medications.
However, the use of St. John’s Wort for severe
depression has produced conflicting results and so may
not be appropriate for people with this condition."
