Can't Sleep? Read Your Food Package Labels
Either you will fall asleep very quickly or you will be jolted awake for the rest of the night!
In most states and provinces, legislation covers what needs to be on the packaging …such as the ingredients amounts of carbohydrates, fat, the manufacturer, the "best before" date…things we now take for granted, but it wasn't always like this.
But that won't cover YOUR particular needs and we all have them. For instance, if you have kidney disease, your doctor might restrict your protein intake. So read what's in a bagel. Did you really think a BAGEL had protein in it? Check your dietary recommendations and the amounts of daily allowances. You can enjoy the bagel, but you would need to adjust the rest of your food intake. Need extra fibre? The read the package labels. Discover the taste of humus…it's really delicious and as a spread on crackers, it's great. And the fibre comes along as a bonus!
Salt restrictions in place for hypertension or some of the degenerative conditions such as Meniere's? Read the labels and wash the contents, or substitute some spices.
Visit some of the food company sites. They have all kinds of ideas and current recipes. They even suggest cutting down on the amount of fat in their own mixes! Do watch the "pre-packaged foods" as they often need the additives and other chemicals to make their products work. Become creative and go back to some basics.
If taking back control of your health is part of your new life plan, one of the easiest ways to start is to read labels. If you want your body to work effectively, you have to give it the right fuel. Not sure? All it takes is a little education and a big desire to change your past results. Bon Appetit!
